Scary Streaming: Should Horror Fans Subscribe to New Paramount+?
Yesterday, Tales From the Darkside: The Movie turned 31 years old. I wanted to watch it again and the only place it was streaming was Paramount+. Hum… I had already used up my free trailer when it was still called CBS All Access to watch the first few episodes of The Stand. But then the trial ended and I never bothered to restart it. Or finished The Stand for that matter. Anyhow, last night I wanted to revisit Tales From the Darkside: The Movie and so I bought another month of the service. Should you?

One thing that rubs me the wrong way right off the bat is that – for some God-forsaken reason – the platform doesn’t let you create a watchlist. Or at least I couldn’t figure it out. And I’m pretty savvy at these things. That is a fucking HUGE drawback. But one they might fix any day now. So we’ll see. But all the same…
That’s Strike #1
Moving on, as you can see by the list(s) above, that isn’t much of a selection. What about (get ready) Friday the 13th, Pet Sematary (2019), Event Horizon, Pet Sematary (1989), Pet Sematary Two, The Dead Zone, Silver Bullet, April Fool’s Day, Maximum Overdrive, The Relic, Sleepy Hollow, Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Paranormal Activity, Shutter Island, World War Z, Annihilation, A Quiet Place, Overlord, Crawl, The Addams Family, Addams Family Values, Vampire in Brooklyn, Escape from L.A., Thinner, Explorers, The Keep, Student Bodies, Trick or Treat, Graveyard Shift, Fire in the Sky, Congo, Virtuosity, Face/Off, Bless the Child, War of the Worlds, Disturbia, Cowboys & Aliens, Super 8, The Devil Inside, or Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.
Hell, they don’t even have 200 Cigarettes. Why does no one like 200 Cigarettes? Urgh. But they have The Uninvited. So, you know, yay.
It all makes me think that they launched too early. But wait, they’ve been around for a while now. They were just called CBS All Access before. So where are their horror movies? I guess the licensing is out to other streamers. Maybe they’ll get them back as time goes on. That’s not even getting into their former divisions, subsidiaries, and joint ventures. But in the meantime?
That’s Strike #2
Oh, and the platform doesn’t even have a HORROR section. It’s all mixed up in Thrillers, Drama, and so forth. This strikes me like the powers that be behind the scenes having a better-than-you view on horror movies. So I guess they’re forgetting how important horror has been to the studio’s past. Friday the 13th 1-8, anyone?
Urgh. Strike #3
In conclusion, Paramount+ is NOT a service horror fans need to shell out their extra cash on. At least not at the moment. That said, maybe they’ll get their horror game together soon. After all, we already know they have new Paranormal Activity and Pet Sematary movies in the works. And that’s fucking awesome. So we’ll see.
