The film sports a 27% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus: A milquetoast and muddled thriller that drowns in its frenzied homages, The Woman in the Window will have audiences closing their curtains.
Synopsis:
Anna Fox (Amy Adams) is an agoraphobic child psychologist. She keeps tabs on the picture-perfect family across the street through the windows of her New York City brownstone. Her life turns upside down when she inadvertently witnesses a brutal crime. Based on the gripping, best-selling novel and adapted by Tracy Letts. Shocking secrets are revealed and nothing and no one is what they seem.
In addition to Adams and Russell, The Woman in the Window stars Gary Oldman, Anthony Mackie, Fred Hechinger, Brian Tyree Henry, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Julianne Moore. Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice, Anna Karenina, Atonement, Hanna, Pan, Darkest Hour) directed the film.
Wright says: “I liked the idea of the kind of minimalist constraints of making a film completely set in one house. I’m also interested in the blurring between subjective and objective reality, truth and lies, and the lies we tell ourselves and how we create our own reality. I didn’t know the book prior to reading the script. And I was thrilled and excited and I wanted to know what happened next.”
