Jessica M. Thompson (The Light of the Moon) will direct from a screenplay written by Blair Butler (Polaroid, Marvel’s Helstrom) with revisions by Thompson. Emile Gladstone is also producing. The studio fast-tracking the movie for an end-of-summer start.

The film is a contemporary horror thriller. It tells the story of a young woman who is courted and swept off her feet, only to realize a gothic conspiracy is afoot.

Recent Oscar-winner, director Chloé Zhao (NomadlandEternals) is also working on a new take on Dracula. Her film is a “sci-fi Western” approach to the material.

The film “will be a far cry from the more traditional or even modern incarnations made over the years […] Zhao’s version is described as an original, futuristic, sci-fi Western. Themes of being on society’s fringes. Something Zhao has tackled in her previous work, will course through the project’s veins.”

Zhao tells Variety: “’m a huge fan of the book. And I wanted to see what essence I can find [in Dracula], and then be able to reimagine this really beloved character I love so muchI like complicated characters. That was a very important book for me. Immortality is something that I started exploring on Eternals. But is something I want to question and understand.”

Chloé Zhao’s Eternals hits theaters on November 5th. Her new Dracula film does not yet have a release date. No word on how this new Dracula will also affect director Karyn Kusama (The Invitation, Jennifer’s Body) was also developing with Blumhouse…
