Horror History: Ari Aster’s HEREDITARY Is Now 3 Years Old
On this day in horror history, writer-director Ari Aster‘s Hereditary was released in 2018. Toni Collette stars with Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, and Gabriel Byrne.
Hereditary premiered in the Midnight section at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2018. It was a success, making over $80 million on a $10 million budget to become A24’s highest-grossing film worldwide. It grossed $44.1 million in the United States and Canada.
The trailer accidentally played before the PG-rated family film Peter Rabbit in a theater in Innaloo, Western Australia. Needless to say, everyone was worried.
Synopsis:
When the matriarch of the Graham family passes away, her daughter and grandchildren begin to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry, trying to outrun the sinister fate they have inherited.
The film sports an 89% rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus: Hereditary uses its classic setup as the framework for a harrowing, uncommonly unsettling horror film whose cold touch lingers long beyond the closing credits.
