Happy Days! A QUIET PLACE PART II and Horror Win the Box Office Once Again!
Who says horror is dead? Certainly not us! And certainly not movie-goers. A Quiet Place Part II, which is in its third weekend, has proven too much to beat for competing films. Not even In the Heights, Jon M. Chu’s musical created by Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda, was able to take the top spot away from it.
Horror continues being the little genre that could. Everyone expected the new musical by the creator of Hamilton to sweep the box office. It had a $20+ million opening weekend projection. During a pandemic, that’s quite lofty, even if things are starting to open up. Warner Bros. put a huge marketing campaign behind it.

But seemingly out of nowhere, A Quiet Place Part II pulled in $11.7 million this weekend, bringing up its domestic box office to $109M. In the Heights was close, but not close enough: Miranda’s smaller IP pulled in $11.4M, despite having the near-universal support and approval of the core musical audience.
The two films were different, of course, and not just in their genre. A Quiet Place Part II had a theatrical-only release, while In the Heights debuted on HBO Max as well. John Krasinski‘s follow-up to his 2018 hit proves that audiences are willing to go to the theater to watch a movie not available on streaming services.
But perhaps more than anything, as if it needed proving, A Quiet Place Part II shows that horror is here to stay, and that it makes financial sense for studios as well as audiences.
