“Dissecting Horror” Continues TODAY with the Creatives of Netflix’s BLACK SUMMER @ 6 PM (PST)
The next installment of the “Dissecting Horror” digital panel series will take place TODAY (Tuesday, June 22nd) at 6 pm PST and be with the creative talent from Netflix’s Black Summer. Panelists include sound designer Neil Fazzari, composer Alec Puro, production designer Bobby Vanonen, editor Chris Bragg and one of the show’s stars Justin Chu Cary (Spears). Season 2 of Black Summer was released last week!

Synopsis:
In the dark, early days of a zombie apocalypse, complete strangers band together to find the strength they need to survive and get back to loved ones.
Dissecting Horror will stream on Dread Central’s Facebook and also Twitch Channel. The panel is also available on our official YouTube channel.
Dread Central and Jordan von Netzer of Projection PR launched “Dissecting Horror” on April 15, 2020, with a panel focused on horror film scores. Since then, they have produced panels spotlighting stunt coordinators, costume designers, visual/special effects and the creatives behind Followed, Cruiser, 12 Hour Shift, Don’t Look Back, Hunter Hunter, Willy’s Wonderland, Wrong Turn, Dreamcatcher, Making Monsters, The Banishing, Initiation, and Parallel.
ABOUT THE PANELISTS:
ALEC PURO (Composer)
Alec Puro is an award-winning Film and Television composer, accomplished studio musician, and entrepreneur. He has created the music for over 45 films, thousands of hours of television programming, and countless advertisements. Among other projects, Puro is best known for scoring the hit Freeform drama The Fosters, Netflix’s zombie thriller Black Summer, Hulu’s The Mighty Ones, and the Netflix comedy series The Crew. His collaboration with Linkin Park scoring the film MALL as well as other films including The Art of Getting By starring Emma Roberts and Freddie Highmore and Higher Ground starring Academy Award Nominee Vera Farmiga. A veteran of the indie film world, he recently composed the music for the gritty urban drama PIMP executive produced by Lee Daniels starring Keke Palmer, comedy film All Nighter, starring Emile Hirsch and Academy Award Winner J.K. Simmons and A Happening of Monumental Proportions, actress Judy Greer’s directorial debut starring Katie Holmes, Allison Janney, and Rob Riggle.

Puro began his career playing drums in studio sessions with the likes of Jackson Browne, Cher, and Robby Krieger of The Doors. In 1996, while attending California Institute of the Arts, Puro launched the band Deadsy with longtime friend Elijah Blue. The group’s first album debuted at #99 on the Billboard Top 200 charts, selling 20,000 copies in the first week, and the band embarked upon a decade of world tours opening for bands such as Linkin Park and Stone Temple Pilots, playing to packed audiences at historic venues like Madison Square Garden.
During his time with Deadsy, Puro also began composing music independently as well as licensing to television shows such as Chicago Hope and NYPD Blue. Puro’s first significant success as a composer came from the 2007 hit Sundance film The Good Night. Starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Penelope Cruz, the film and its score both received widespread praise from the likes of Steven Spielberg and Variety Magazine. In 2011, Puro returned to Sundance with two feature films making their debut; The Art of Getting By, starring Freddie Highmore and Emma Roberts, and Higher Ground, the critically acclaimed directorial debut from Academy Award Nominee Vera Farmiga. Puro became a Sundance regular, returning again in 2012 with his third invitation for scoring Jonathan Kasdan’s The First Time. Since 2007, Puro’s work has been a regular fixture at some of the world’s most integral film festivals, from SXSW to Cannes to the Tribeca Film Festival where his film Like Water won the “Best New Director” award in 2011. Recently his films Ashby starring Mickey Rourke and Emma Roberts as well as PIMP executive produced by Lee Daniels starring Keke Palmer made their Tribeca Film Festival debuts in 2015 and 2018 respectively.
To support his creative endeavors, Puro founded Gramoscope Music in 2006, a full-service music production company with an extensive and diverse music catalog for licensing in film and television. Some notable projects they have created music for include the new theme for Real Time With Bill Maher, American Horror Story, Botched, So You Think You Can Dance, Running Wild With Bear Grylls, Wicked Tuna, Scientology and the Aftermath, Glee, The Real Housewives of OC, Beverly Hills, New Jersey, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, NBA 2K, and The Americans to name a few.
CHRIS BRAGG (Editor)
Having acquired an interest in the craft at a very young age, Chris’s primary focus in life has always been filmmaking. Earning an honours degree in Film Studies from the University of Calgary in 2011, Chris hit the ground running, taking on every available position in the local film industry. Eager to expand his knowledge base, Chris’s propensities for storytelling and technical composition steered him toward the post-production sector of the business. Demonstrating a particular aptitude for editorial and visual effects work, Chris’s autodidactic tendencies soon gave him a general competence at and understanding of the post-production pipeline as a whole.
Over the last three years, Chris has worked as both an editor and visual effects artist on the first two seasons of Netflix’s original post-apocalyptic zombie series Black Summer. Having personally overseen the post-production of many films to date, Chris is able to speak to virtually any component of the post-production process, from Dailies to Editing, to Visual Effects, to even Sound Design and Color Grading.
Unrivaled in regard to his passion for the film medium, Chris’s dedication to the craft is his greatest strength. Chris’s natural curiosity and drive for excellence has seen him attain experience in a wide variety of departments, including editorial, camera, lighting, and producing. Combined with a near-obsessive commitment to obtaining mastery over the ever-evolving technologies and methodologies of post-production, Chris possesses all the qualities inherent to a highly qualified post-production director.
BOBBY VANONEN (Production Designer)
Bobby Vanonen is a sought-after Production Designer, Artist, and Custom Fabricator, based out of Calgary, AB, Canada.
For more than a decade he has helped bring film and TV projects to life with his eye for strong design and his ability to lead teams in projects of various sizes and scope. As an artist and custom fabricator, he has devised ingenious design solutions for unique builds. His work ethic is unparalleled and his enthusiasm is infectious. He is equally at home in a creative meeting as he is in the trenches of the project.
Alongside his wife Gill, they run Red Events Design and Decor, an upscale event design and custom fabrication company.
NEIL FAZZARI (Sound Designer)
Neil Fazzari is a Sound Designer, Re-recording Mixer, and Documentary Filmmaker. He spent his youth in the heart of the Finger Lakes in Upstate New York and moved to New York City upon graduating from Syracuse University. He is best known for his haunting hyperrealism and expert use of the surround stage to create rich, immersive atmospheres that keep the audience in a perfect state of suspended disbelief. His work has appeared on Netflix, Amazon, HBO, Hulu, IFC, Syfy, and Discovery. He currently lives in Los Angeles and continues to push the boundaries of what can be achieved with sound in a highly competitive and rapidly evolving industry.
JUSTIN CHU CARY (Spears)
Justin Chu Cary was born in Oakland, California. He was raised in Berkeley, California. The oldest son of an African American father and a Chinese American mother.
With an early pull to visual arts, Cary won a statewide visual art competition in 4th and 6th grade, and has never really looked back. He is an alumnus of Berkeley High School where he ran track and was the captain of his wrestling team. Cary was recruited to the University of California, Davis for Track & Field and ran the 800M and 4x400M relays. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a double minor in Theater and Visual Arts.
After graduating from UC Davis, Cary moved back to the Bay Area where he became heavily involved in the local theater scene. In 2009, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue film and television.
Early on in LA, Cary made a living off of visual art, graphic and web design jobs. He also booked several commercial and modeling campaigns for companies like Nike, Target, Footlocker, Ford, and others. Never pulling away from his love for theater, he also appeared in many small stage productions including, The Meeting, The Death of The Last Black Man In The Whole Entire World, and In The Red and Brown Water, the latter for which he and his cast received the LADCC Award for Best Ensemble. Cary also studied at and performed with the Upright Citizens Brigade and The Actors Gang, and continues to explore his craft at the prestigious Actors Studio.
Cary’s television debut came with a 6-episode recurring role on the NBC soap opera Days of Our Lives. Since then, he has made co-star and guest-star appearances on popular shows like Jane the Virgin, Supergirl, S.W.A.T., and NCIS. Cary made the jump to his first feature film in, Blindspotting – a project written by and starring lifelong friends and fellow Berkeley High alumni Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs.
