Universal Pitched a JAWS Reboot, Spielberg Gave “A Firm No”
Today in, “news that isn’t terribly surprising but good to know”, Universal at some point pitched a Jaws reboot to Steven Spielberg. Of course, Spielberg isn’t about that life and turned them down. This news comes shortly after the report that Spielberg’s Amblin has signed a deal with Netflix to produce several movies per year.

This little bit of news, according to reports, says, “this was already known and not a recent conversation”. Who knows when Universal pitched this idea. Maybe they were hoping now that Spielberg is teaming up with Netflix – who he was formerly critical of – they could pass some questionable decisions by him. Jaws was released in 1975 and is considered by most to be the birth of the summer blockbuster.
How would you even remake Jaws? It’s premise is so perfect and tightly done that I don’t think you could add anything. Maybe if you did a straight shot-for-shot remake like Gus Van Sant’s Psycho? That really wouldn’t add anything new to the mix. Don’t mess with Jaws! Just leave it as is. It’s place in cinema history is cemented, and it doesn’t need mucked about with.
Jaws received 3 whole sequels of…declining quality. Spielberg wasn’t behind the camera for any of those. Jaws: The Revenge, the 4th entry, holds a whole 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Making 470 million on a budget of 12 million is quite a feat for Jaws. Especially since the animatronic they used was so terrible they called it “the great white turd”.
