New EXORCIST Sequel to Ignore All Other Sequels?

When producers Jason Blum and director David Gordon Green rebooted the seminal slasher Halloween in 2018, they made the bold decision to ignore all of the previous sequels to John Carpenter’s original Halloween (released in 1978). Now, Blum is hinting that he might do the same thing with a new Exorcist movie.

In a recent interview with Den of Geeks, Blum stated:

“[The new Exorcist sequel is] going to be like David’s Halloween sequel. I think it’s going to pleasantly surprise all the skeptics out there. We had a lot of skeptics about Halloween and David turned them around, and I think he’s going to turn it around with The Exorcist.”

While The Exorcist III has amassed a huge cult following since its release in 1990, and a recent 2-season Exorcist TV series from showrunner Jeremy Slater that included a tie-in to the original film was popular, the other sequels and prequels have been critical disappointments. It makes sense, then, that Blum and Green would want to start fresh, creating a direct sequel to 1973’s The Exorcist, directed by William Friedkin from a screenplay by William Peter Blatty).

Of course, this is all conjecture. Blum went on to say about the upcoming Exorcist sequel:

“I want to make a movie for people that know and love the first Exorcist and are furious that we’re doing this, but somehow drag themselves to the theater. I want them to come out happy. And I want to make a movie that people who’ve never heard of The Exorcist really enjoy. I think David did that with Halloween. I think he’ll do that with The Exorcist also.”

The film is still in pre-production with nothing known about the plot or the cast. But we’ll be keeping our ears to the ground in order to bring you all Exorcist-related news as details emerge. Stay tuned and check back often!
