If THE PURGE 6 Gets Greenlit Frank Grillo Will Likely Return

Since 2013 when The Purge burst onto the screen, we have been treated to sequels galore; most recently The Forever Purge, which came out on July 2nd (trailer and synopsis below). James DeMonaco, the genius behind the original and all the sequels revealed to Slashfilm that he might not be done with the franchise. He has been working on a script for The Purge 6, and if given the green light, the Frank Grillo character Sergeant Leo Barnes will be called back into action.

The Forever Purge Synopsis:
After the annual Purge is abolished, a group of masked outlaw Purgers in Texas refuse to give up the fight in director Everardo Gout’s fifth and final movie in the dystopian horror franchise.

Everardo Gout (Mars) directs The Forever Purge from a screenplay written and co-produced by creator James DeMonaco. Josh Lucas, Ana de la Reguera, Tenoch Huerta, Leven Rambin, Will Patton, and Cassidy Freeman star.

“Dude, my Purge 6 idea is all about Frank.”

“It’s all about the Leo character. Without giving anything away, I think he’s off on his own, but he’s going to be called back into action, hopefully on Purge 6, if we’re lucky enough to do it. I hope that Leo comes back. That’s the goal. When I came up with Purge 6, he was the center of the idea. I’m hoping that we get to do that with him.”

Grillo’s character Sgt. Leo Barnes first appeared in 2014’s The Purge: Anarchy as an LAPD officer using the Purge to avenge the death of his son by hunting down the drunk driver responsible.

An instant fan favorite, Leo Barnes returned to the franchise in The Purge: Election Year in 2016. In this entry, Barnes is no longer a vigilante, but head of security for presidential hopeful Senator Charlie Roan, whose campaign is focused on ending the annual Purge. This, of course, makes her a target and it is up to Barnes to keep her alive.

In addition to DeMonaco’s hints to a possible Purge 6, Frank Grillo himself has teased a little information.

In January, he told Collider “We are talking, [DeMonaco] and I, another Purge movie. He reached out to me not too long ago and Sébastian [K. Lemercier], the producer, and they’re like, ‘What do you think?’ and I’m like, ‘What do you think?’ and they’re like, ‘We talked to Universal and we’ll see Leo Barnes in the [next] Purge if we can come up with something great.’ I said, ‘I’m in. I’ll do it in a heartbeat.'”
