Trailer: HOWL FROM BEYOND THE FOG is a Meiji-Era Kaiju Horror Made with Puppets

Regular readers of Dread Central know that we’re huge fans of kaiju horror and we love reporting on movies and films featuring giant monsters. We’ve seen live-action movies and animated series in 2021, but nothing quite like Howl from Beyond the Fog.

The trailer may remind you of The Dark Crystal. There are no human actors in Howl from Beyond the Fog–only puppets. Check it out and read more about the movie below.

Synopsis:
Set in Kyushu during the Meiji era, a blind girl, named Takiri, and the blind monster from a nearby lake, named Nebula, fight against greedy developers who threaten to take over her family’s land. Using an all puppet human cast and a fantastic monster suit, it offers a new aesthetic in the world of kaiju films.

The puppets are all made in the bunraku style and the kaiju is a man in a suit (not a miniature). Howl from Beyond the Fog is directed by Daisuke Sato and features the vocal talents of Suguru Inoue, Akane Kanamori, Michiyo Ishimito, Nana Nagao, and Tomohiro Matsumoto.

Living legend Keizô Murase is the special effects supervisor. Howl from Beyond the Fog is currently available to purchase on DVD, HERE.
