Actor Melissa George Now Recalls Unusual Audition For David Lynch

Mulholland Drive is currently premiering its 4K restoration at the Canne Film Festival. While promoting her French drama Peaceful, Australian actor and Scream Queen Melissa George revealed to Deadline how David Lynch cast her in the film two decades ago.

Horror fans are very familiar with Melissa George’s work as the actor has starred in numerous classic horror titles. These include 30 Days of Night, 2005’s The Amityville Horror, Triangle, A Lonely Place to Die, Turistas, and Dark City. With all that said, a collaboration between Geroge and Lynch makes lots of sense. While she didn’t exactly land the starring role in Mulholland Drive, she was certainly memorable…

Synopsis:
A dark-haired woman (Laura Elena Harring) is left amnesiac after a car crash. She wanders the streets of Los Angeles in a daze before taking refuge in an apartment. There she is discovered by Betty (Naomi Watts), a wholesome Midwestern blonde who has come to the City of Angels seeking fame as an actress. Together, the two attempt to solve the mystery of Rita’s true identity. The story is set in a dream-like Los Angeles, spoilt neither by traffic jams nor smog.

Recalling the audition process, Melissa George had this to say:

“The way I got that part was I arrived off a flight from Australia, and I went to meet Johanna Ray who’s cast all of his movies, from Blue Velvet to all of them. I went into her office. I was 19 years old, and she took a polaroid of me. That was it, there was no casting. David Lynch put the polaroid pictures on a table, and he basically meditated on our faces and he came to my face and said, ‘This is the girl.’ I mean, I had the iconic line in the movie, ‘This is the girl.’ I didn’t have to do much.”

By the time George was on set, she remembers asking Lynch to clarify the film’s plot.

“At one point, I asked him what the film was about, and he said, ‘Whatever you think it’s about is what it’s about.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah that doesn’t help me a lot, but thank you.’”

Melissa George is about to embark on the second season of the AppleTV+ Series The Mosquito Coast
