Animation is an artform that in many ways is overlooked for the sheer difficulty involved in the production. Especially with the hours of work involved to do it in the classic way by hand drawing and coloring every frame. When a true animated film comes along, it can be an unforgettable and extraordinary experience.
Dash Shaw is one of those visionary animators whose artistic skill and imagination show no bounds. In Cryptozoo he has created a fantastic and lucid world in which mythological creatures not only exist, but are brought to vivid life with boundless colors and visuals. It is not so much to view this film, then it is to experience it as a journey into the very dimensions of our waking mind.
Cryptozoo is written, directed and animated by Shaw. It features the voices of Lake Bell (Black Rock), Michael Cera (Superbad), Louisa Krause (Billions) and Peter Stormare (American Gods)
The film just won the coveted NEXT Innovator Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Synopsis:
Visionary comic book writer/artist/filmmaker Dash Shaw’s vibrant, fantastical animated feature follows cryptozookeepers through a richly-drawn hallucinatory world as they struggle to capture a baku (a legendary dream-eating hybrid creature) and begin to wonder if they should display these rare beasts in the confines of a zoo, or if these mythical creatures should remain hidden and unknown.
I know that this film will find an audience and looks to be a lucid journey into the depths of imagination and mythology.
