ABOUT THE PANELISTS:
DAVID CARBONIER and JUSTIN POWELL (Directors)
David Charbonier and Justin Powell are life-long friends and two up-and-coming directors in the horror space. They recently completed their feature film debut, The Boy Behind the Door, which had its world premiere at the 2020 edition of Fantastic Fest and also screened at AFI Fest, during which it was able to garner its current score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s now available to stream on Shudder along with their independent horror fantasy, The Djinn, which was recently acquired by IFC. The Hollywood Reporter called The Boy Behind the Door “a delicate and memorably successful balancing act that effectively contextualizes some deliberately challenging material,” while Bloody Disgusting called it “unrelentingly intense” and “shockingly dark,” noting that “Charbonier and Powell created one impressively ballsy debut.”
Quote from the Directors: “We made this film as a testament to the spirit of independent filmmaking. Our story is framed in horror, but we hope that its themes of strength and survival will encourage children and adults alike to love themselves despite their perceived shortcomings.”
STEPHEN BOYER (Editor)
Stephen Boyer was born and raised in Los Angeles with an interest in filmmaking from quite a young age. As a child, he started making movies in his parents’ backyard and knew very early on that he wanted his career to revolve around cinema. His pursuits led him to film school, where he focused his efforts on editing and the post-production process. After graduating and taking on a plethora of professional short-form projects, Boyer landed his first feature film as an editor in 2019 with The Boy Behind the Door, which had a successful festival run and was eventually released in 2021 by AMC Networks’ Shudder streaming service. Boyer has continued to foster positive collaborative relationships with numerous filmmakers in his career while always working to serve a project’s story above all else. Boyer has also made a concerted effort to teach up-and-coming filmmakers whenever possible, in an attempt to demystify the industry and inspire optimism in cinema as an art form.
RYAN BRETT PUCKETT (Production Designer)
Ryan Brett Puckett is a Los Angeles-based Production Designer, and member of the Art Directors Guild, Local 800.
Ryan first realized it was possible to create new worlds on his childhood trips to the movie theater. He watched with awe and inspiration as a DeLorean transcended time or a minecart raced through cavernous mazes. These worlds were more thrilling than anything he had imagined, and they set him on a path to create his own places that did not exist.
That path wound through industrial design, fine art, and photography, then blurred into filmmaking and the role of Production Designer. As a Production Designer, Ryan spends each day on set creating that sense of awe he felt as a child so that he can spark others’ imagination in the same way.
