Synopsis:
Faking a Murderer follows filmmakers Stuart Stone and Adam Rodness on their noble yet perhaps misguided quest to track down a seedy-looking stranger they’ve discovered online who—in a disturbing video—seemingly confesses to a homicide. Or at least that’s what they think. Seeing the popularity of true crime shows, they decide to try and turn this discovery into their own killer hit. With the support (both moral and financial) of a distributor, the duo sets off on their journey to try and track down this elusive creep. When they bring the video to law enforcement, they’re told—repeatedly—that it’s really not much to go on, and they’re putting a lot of time and energy into what essentially is a fool’s errand. Determined to make this work, they flex, stretch and break their budget in pursuit of a hit new crime story, but are Stuart and Adam in over their heads?
“We wanted to pay homage to the true-crime genre and create a social experiment of our own,” says co-writer/producer Adam Rodness, who will be attending the Dread Vision premiere with writer/director Stu Stone and star Tony Nappo. “We were so fascinated at how these shows like The Jinx, The Staircase and Making a Murderer were so captivating. They were just so well produced! We had just finished shooting our documentary Jack of All Trades, and the idea just hit us. We thought, ‘We could create our own true crime story, shoot it like a doc, create a fictitious serial killer and use the real public to push the narrative forward. So, Faking a Murderer was born!”
The filmmakers admit to having a tough balancing act mixing horror and comedy for their movie. “It’s always a challenge to take two genres and try to blend them together,” says Stone. “Horror and comedy are like oil and vinegar. Meaning, with the perfect amount of both, they can combine to make something amazing. All of our previous horror films have always leaned on our comedic senses, and this particular film let us go all out. To make an audience laugh is to make them feel comfortable, and that’s when you can go in and scare them! It’s beautiful.”
