To herald the Dread Central free screening of The Stairs this coming Tuesday, August 10th (see details here in the link below) at Hollywood’s Arena Cinelounge Sunset (6464 Sunset Boulevard; 323-924-1644), we’ve got an exclusive clip of what our heroes will face in the acclaimed fright flick.

Synopsis:
The Stairs is a frightening tale about a group of hikers hunted by a sinister presence in the woods. Twenty years after the mysterious disappearance of an 11‐year‐old boy and his grandfather, a group of friends find themselves along the same trail, unaware of a long‐forgotten evil lurking just beyond the tree line. What started as a week‐long adventure with buddies, quickly turns into a terrifying fight for survival as they come face to face with the thing that nightmares are made of.
“Since my background is stunts, I wanted to do something different for my directorial debut other than making an action film,” says Tiemann on what made him take The Stairs as his first feature. “I decided on The Stairs because of the creepiness of finding something out in the wild so alien and out of place that it would evoke a threat response from the characters and ultimately the audience. It was such a fun script to write. I had to make the film.”
Tiemann notes that transitioning from stunts and special effects (he handled both on Z Nation) to directing seemed like a natural career path. “It wasn’t necessarily easy as it was more of a smooth integration of the knowledge and experience I acquired on set for the last 20 years,” he says. “Coordinators are trained to know where to place the camera to get the action shot, so this knowledge was instrumental in my jump to being a director.”

In finding the right project for his career changeover, being an enthusiast for scary cinema led Tiemann directly to The Stairs. “I am a huge horror fan,” he says. “I would sneak out of my room after my mother was asleep and watch Elvira’s Movie Macabre at midnight back in the ’80s. It was a whole new world that opened up to me, and I was hooked. Once I was old enough, I would watch any and all horror I could get my hands on, including some of the great Italian grindhouse-style horror films from acclaimed directors like Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci. My favorite subgenre is horror sci-fi.”
Film festivals have been flipping for The Stairs. The movie has received great reception from horror fests around the world. It has been an Official Selection at 15 film festivals and has garnered 11 nominations and more than 22 wins. Accolades include Best Picture at Haunted House FearFest and the Audience Award for Best Picture at Nevermore Film Festival. Most recently, The Stairs won top honors at the combined 2020/2021 International Horror Hotel Film Festival, namely Best Director (Tiemann), Best Cinematography (Ryan Purcell), Best Actor (Korson), Best Sci‐Fi Feature, and Best Overall Film.
The Stairs co-stars John Schneider (The Dukes of Hazzard) and Academy Award-nominee Kathleen Quinlan (Apollo 13). Reviewing the film, Joseph Perry of Whenitwascool.com said: “The Stairs combines the otherworldly and monsters into one film, and creature-feature fans should find the practical effects makeup and creature suits impressive.”
