The score by BC Smith (Smoke Signals, Skins), utilizes both acoustic and electronic instrumentation that subtly adds to the different characters and events in the film—a range that spans from idyllic to horrific. The album is available digitally tomorrow, August 13th.
Today, Dread Central is thrilled to exclusively debut two tracks from The Stairs soundtrack! Listen to “Jessie” and “ShroomSexKill” below the trailer and synopsis!
Synopsis:
A frightening tale about a group of hikers hunted by a sinister presence in the woods. Twenty years after the mysterious disappearance of an 11-year-old boy and his grandfather, a group of friends find themselves along the same trail, unaware of a long-forgotten evil lurking just beyond the tree line. What started as a week-long adventure with friends, quickly turns into a terrifying fight for survival as they come face to face with the thing that nightmares are made of.
Directed by Peter “Drago” Tiemann, The Stairs stars Adam Korson (SurrealEstate, Imposters), Brent Bailey (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., NCIS) Stacey Oristano (Friday Night Lights, In Plain Sight), Tyra Colar (Cougar Town, The Mentalist), and festival winner Josh Crotty (Scandal, Shockwave).
BC Smith says, “Scoring The Stairs was a creative joy. There is nothing normal or ordinary about what the characters encounter, which proved fabulous inspiration for the music. The characters struggle to comprehend what they’re seeing, and the music helps to subliminally enhance that uncertainty, absurdity, and terror.”
He adds, “The Stairs represent a malignant evil, incongruous to the serenity of the forest.
The score adopts that metaphor by using sounds that don’t normally go together, like acoustic guitars and modular synthesizers, or sounds that seem familiar but actually something else entirely.”

ABOUT BC SMITH
Composer BC Smith is a unique talent and a profound musical storyteller. From his very first film score, Chris Eyre and Sherman Alexie’s Smoke Signals (Sundance Film Festival Audience Award & Filmmaker Trophy winner) to horror master Tobe Hooper’s final film Djinn, and recently Steven Cantor’s Hulu documentary Ballet Now, BC’s music continues to enhance an incredibly diverse and eclectic collection of films.
Whether working with modular synthesizers, orchestras, multifarious ensembles, peyote singers, or bespoke electronics, BC is one of those rare composers not bound by genre or convention. He approaches each movie from its own unique perspective to create an original sonic pallet and score that is truly born from the film’s story.
