The Spirit of Michael Myers is “Unkillable” in John Carpenter’s New Track From the ‘Halloween Kills’ Score

It’s widely accepted that John Carpenter has a knack for composing hard-driving, ear-worm-y horror themes. It’s one big reason why—when limiting his involvement in David Gordon Green’s 2018 Halloween and its forthcoming follow-up, Halloween Kills—his decision to focus mainly on the film’s music felt so right.

Perhaps even more striking, though, is what he’s been able to do with movements in his scores that aren’t themes. A track entitled “The Shape Hunts Allyson” from Green’s Halloween is one shining example of this, and today, Carpenter has given us another.

Via his Twitter account, the horror master shared “Unkillable,” a walloping piece of music from the original score for Halloween Kills.

Listen here:

Co-written by Carpenter’s son and bandmate, Cody, and frequent collaborator Daniel Davies, “Unkillable” pulsates with thumping synths, piercing piano pangs, and eerie wails of electric guitar. In less than four minutes, it crystallizes the menace of Michael Myers in a way that might have you playing out the next chapter of his saga in your mind’s eye before you’ve seen it.

On Facebook, Carpenter also shared a first look at the physical versions of the Halloween Kills soundtrack. Various vinyl releases come in a kaleidoscope of colors (one example below), and even a cassette tape will be up for grabs. All are available from Sacred Bones Records October 15.

By now, Carpenter and company have formed an alchemic connection to Halloween‘s iconic soundscape. They have far more technological tools at their disposal than Carpenter ever did when he first scored the original Halloween with his keyboard in 1978. But they wield them with purpose, and this latest drop is a thrilling reminder of the results of that approach.
