New Book ‘Guillermo del Toro: The Iconic Filmmaker and His Work’ Chronicles GDT’s Legacy This October

Guillermo del Toro stands among those select few filmmakers whose personality and tastes exert endless influence. His work has inspired exhaustive museum exhibits; his vast collection of art and oddities has made his home into a de facto into a museum in itself.

Now, Ian Nathan further cements GDT’s legacy with his new book, Guillermo del Toro: The Iconic Filmmaker and His Work.

Nathan’s book first looks at del Toro’s upbringing in Mexico. In a press release, he’s cast as “a creative but isolated child, surrounded by ornate Catholicism and monster magazines. [At] film school, we learn of his influences, from Kafka to Buñuel, and explore his 1993 debut Cronos, the independent horror debut which draws on the religious and occult themes which recur throughout del Toro’s work.”

The book also illustrates how del Toro’s matured as a director. Nathan’s narrative charts his tumultuous experience making Mimic in 1997, his blockbuster success, and the impact of his celebrated dark fantasy features, Pan’s Labrynth and The Shape of Water.

Guillermo del Toro: The Iconic Filmmaker and His Work is presented in a slipcase with an eight-page gatefold section. The book is rife with photographs of the director at work on set and stills from his filmography.

Nathan previously authored Alien Vault, the authorized history of Ridley Scott’s seminal classic, Terminator Vault, Tarantino, Tim Burton, The Coen Brothers, and Anything You Can Imagine: Peter Jackson and the Making of Middle-earth. He is also the former editor and executive editor of Empire, where he still currently works as a contributing editor.
