‘The Shining’: Stephen King’s Novel Now Becomes An Opera

Listen, The Shining is operatic. From the soaring opening credits through the Rockies ’till the snow-blinding finale, Kubrick’s adaptation of the Stephen King masterwork is hella dramatic. So, it’s no surprise that Opera Colorado is staging The Shining in their upcoming 2022 season. And it looks wild.

As per the official website, the operatic adaptation of The Shining is written by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec and librettist Mark Campbell. Hoping for a fresh start, the Torrance family takes up the care of Colorado’s infamous Overlook Hotel. Little do they know that the isolation and the hotel’s corrupting spirits will spark an inevitable descent into madness.

While it’s been done before, what better company to stage The Shining than Opera Colorado? Homestate of all things Shining. The show originally premiered on May 7, 2016, at the Ordway Music Theater in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Now she’s back, and it seems personal.

The cast for the all-new Colorado production includes Edward Parks, Kelly Kaduce, Kevin Deas, and Vale Rideout as Delbert Grady.

The Shining isn’t the first time Stephen King was adapted for the stage. Carrie the Musical opened on Broadway in 1988 and is still considered to be one of the biggest flops in history. Failure won’t keep a bad girl down, though, as the Carrie musical lives on. It saw an off-Broadway Revival in 2012 and even appeared on an episode of Riverdale.

Also, other notable Stephen King works to get stage adaptations to include Dolores Clairborne, The Shawshank Redemption, Misery, and Rage. A show titled Ghost Stories adapted multiple King short stories and toured the US during the mid-90s.

Most importantly, The Shining will play on February 26, March 1, 3, 4, and 6th 2022. Get your tickets here.
