Sony Unveils New Images From ‘Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City’

'Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City'

In three new images from Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, fans of the franchise get a closer look at who’s playing its iconic protagonists… and at least one of its mutated monsters.

In one of the new stills, shared today by Sony, Kaya Scodelario and Avan Jogia have their guns drawn as Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy, two Raccoon City citizens facing down the spawn of a viral outbreak in the midwest.

Writer-director Johannes Roberts’ forthcoming film also stars Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, a duplicitous member of the Special Tactics And Rescue Service (STARS); Chad Rook as Richard Aiken, a member of the Bravo police unit; Hannah John-Kamen as STARS member Jill Valentine; and Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield, a key piece of the STARS squad and older brother to Claire.

The creepiest reveal of this batch: a shot of Lisa Trevor (Marina Mazepa), the deformed survivor of a bioweapons experiment conducted by the nefarious Umbrella Pharmaceuticals corporation. In the Resident Evil games, Lisa’s grotesque transformation is brought about by exposure to viruses that are tested nearby the Spencer Mansion, an Umbrella company retreat built by Lisa’s father, George.

In an interview with IGN, Roberts reveals that Lisa’s role in the film is crucial to striking a tonal balance between the terrifying and the tragic. (Casting Mazepa in the part, he notes, was also inspired by what he saw in her performance in James Wan’s Malignant.)
