‘Double Feature’ May Be Sarah Paulson’s Last Season of ‘American Horror Story’

'American Horror Story' Sarah Paulson

For the first time in a long time, Sarah Paulson is doubtful that she’ll return for another season of American Horror Story.

When the star of creator Ryan Murphy’s series joined Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, she admitted that she has no idea what her next joint venture with Murphy will be. “It’s the first time in about three years where I don’t know,” Paulson said. “I think this is my last season of Horror Story, probably.”

However, Paulson did leave the door open for the possibility of staying on the show. “Every time he comes to me with some wackadoodle-stoodle character, I tend to be like, ‘Yes! Let’s do it!’ So, I don’t know,” she adds.

Of course, Murphy himself hinted in a 2019 interview with Deadline that the current season, American Horror Story: Double Feature, may not have a follow-up. At that time, he said: “[S]eason 10 [is] about reuniting fan-favorite actors to come back—because it might be our last season. It’s the last season we have contracted.”

Paulson’s stint on American Horror Story has had a massive impact on the series’ continued success. Likewise, the FX series helped make her a household name both inside and outside of horror fan circles. She was first featured in a supporting role on season one, Murder House, but truly cemented her legacy on the show when she starred as journalist Lana Winters in season two, Asylum. Since then, Paulson’s played a witch, conjoined twins, a ghost, and a woman with trypophobia—a fear of holes—over the course of eight consecutive seasons.

Her heart may just not be in the material anymore, though.

In June, when asked about season six, Roanoke, she confessed to The Hollywood Reporter, “I just don’t care about this season at all.” She stressed that while the show always felt like “home,” she felt “trapped” by her contractual obligation to churn out each new season. She added that her passion for the series was renewed when making season seven, Cult. But she ended up sitting out of the show’s ninth season, 1984, before returning to make Double Feature.
