Wekufe: The Origin of Evil follows a journalism student as she travels with her boyfriend to Chiloé – a remote Patagonian island in the south of Chile – to investigate the connection that exists between a rash of sexually related crimes and the myths and legends surrounding this isolated and mysterious place. The couple soon discovers that behind these legends lies an even darker reality – one ultimately tied to their own destiny – as they realize it’s better to keep your sanity than to discover the truth.

“It was very important for us to have an emotional connection with the project,” Attridge told Dread Central. “So we decided to explore our own fears and seek the answers to our own questions. We wanted to keep the film as real as possible, courageously pushing the limits of narrative language, using real myths and legends, real historical events, real locations and terrifying testimonies from real island locals, to create a very fine line between fiction and reality.”

Having seen Wekufe for myself, I can say the film takes the found-footage conceit in directions I’ve never seen before, incorporating true crime elements and interviews with locals into a broader story. It puts a brilliant sociological and metaphysical twist on myths and legends that will have you questioning every clue that leads to its terrifying conclusion.

“We were always very clear that we wanted to tell a narrative film but using real people,” Attridge said. “We knew that when this narrative resource is used correctly, it gives the viewer the feeling of being part of the events. It’s a great way to bring the audience closer to your story – to immerse them in the world you’ve created.”
