‘Godzilla’ Legends Will Join a Free, Three-Day Deep Dive Into the Series’ History Next Month
This November, fans of Godzilla, Gamera, and other monster megastars will be able to dive deeper into kaiju genre history than ever before. The upcoming online convention Kaiju Masterclass II is bringing kaiju creators, scholars, and more to the table to explore the untold stories and creative processes behind the most influential works of Japanese sci-fi cinema.
From November 5-7, 2021, Kaiju Masterclass II will host interviews and panel discussions with writer-director Kazuki Omori (Godzilla vs. Biollante, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah); Millennium-era Godzilla actor Tsutomu Kitagawa; monster costume sculptor Fuyuki Shinada (Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Gamera 2 and 3); and composer Reijiro Koroku (The Return of Godzilla), among others.

Last year marked the inaugural edition of Kaiju Masterclass. The 2020 event’s free videos included a lost commentary track on Godzilla vs. Biollante by genre historian and author Ed Godziszewski, as well as an in-depth conversation with Shusuke Kaneko, director of Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah, Giant Monsters All-Out Attack.
Kaiju Masterclass was initially created by a team of genre experts and enthusiasts that includes Steve Ryfle (co-author, Ishiro Honda: A Life in Film); Erik Homenick (akirafukube.org); John DeSentis (creator of Kaiju Crescendo); Patrick Galvan (writer, Syfy.com); Matt Parmley and Kyle Byrd (co-hosts, Kaiju Transmissions podcast); and Kyle Gilmore (filmmaker and artist, Vintage Reel Productions).
The event started small and humbly, but has already managed to score some veritable kaiju virtuosos to round out its guest lists in back-to-back years. Special guests and a full programming schedule will be announced later this month. Updates on the event will also be made available at kaijumasterclass.com.
