Dark Skies Not Exactly Hovering Above the Oscar Weekend Box OfficeFact: By the year 2015 all theatrically released horror movies will be billed as being “From the Producers of Paranormal Activity and Insidious.” With that being slapped on movies like Dark Skies, it’s hard not to believe its enticement value is rapidly being diminished.

The latest genre film from Scott Stewart, the maker of Legion and Priest (Does he own a “Get out of Director’s Jail Free” card or what?) opened in 6th place with $8.8 million for the weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. The Dimension/Weinstein PG-13 extraterrestrial fright flick could only muster a C+ Cinemascore, ensuring it has a better future in a Redbox than on the big screen.

The box office continues to be anything but beautiful for last week’s flop Beautiful Creatures, down to 10th place with $3.4 million. That puts the witchy tweener romantic thriller two slots below Warm Bodies, which took in $4.7 million in its 4th week. Hollywood’s search for the next Twilight will have to look elsewhere.

Next weekend Jack kills giants in Bryan Singer’s mega-budget fairy tale and The Last Exorcism Part II answers the question as to whether The Last Exorcism was really a movie that needed to be franchised.
