‘The Outwaters’ Is A Delightfully Disgusting Upcoming Found Footage Movie
Found footage can be downright disgusting thanks to that signature first-person perspective. Snuff-like found footage films such as the August Underground take that to the extreme, of course. But films like Megan is Missing, V/H/S/, and [REC] really embrace the power and beauty of first-person depravity. But such bloody sights are few and far between in the subgenre. That’s why we’re so excited for Robbie Banfitch’s upcoming film The Outwaters.
The synopsis is rather simple. In The Outwaters, four travelers encounter menacing phenomena while camping in a remote stretch of the Mojave Desert. Sounds like a typical found footage movie, right? Well, don’t worry, because this deviates from anything you’d expect. That’s all I’ll say for now.

We were lucky to get a sneak peek of this one and Banfitch does not disappoint. It’s disgusting, it’s bizarre and it really gets under your skin. The Outwaters devolves into absolute bloody madness that’s extremely disorienting to experience. And that disorientation is a good thing! Banfitch never lets the viewer fully understand what’s going on in front of the camera, which places us in the same position as the cameraman. We truly have no clue what’s going on and that’s horrifying.
The Outwaters premieres at the 40th Annual New Jersey Film Festival on February 12th, 2022. The live screening will be attended by the director and cast in New Brunswick, New Jersey. No official release date has been set, but check back for more updates as we have them!
