‘The Substance’: Coralie Fargeat To Direct New Feminist Body Horror
Coralie Fargeat put herself on the map in 2017 with her explosive debut feature, Revenge. Her twist on the typical rape-revenge tale is a critique of the male gaze, the consumption of the human body, and what it means to enact your revenge. Now, she’s finally back in the director’s chair for her upcoming film, The Substance.
Deadline broke the news today, also announcing that Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley have been cast.
Plot details are sparse, but Deadline says it’s “Fargeat’s explosive feminist take on body horror”. She already subverted expectations with Revenge, so we’re excited to see what body horror looks like in her hands.
Revenge, while not specifically body horror, is stuffed with horrific deaths and grave injuries. Sticks protrude through skin, eyes are gouged out, feet are shredded by glass, the list goes on. So even more purposeful body horror from Fargeat is expected to be downright nasty.
The Substance is a Universal Pictures and Working Title production. Fargeat is producing the film alongside Working Title partners Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan.
Production starts in Paris this May. Keep an eye on Dread Central for more news as we get it about The Substance.
