‘The Cellar’: Dread Title Now Acquired By Shudder For April Release
Terrifying new Dread title The Cellar is having a real moment. Just yesterday the film, which stars the forever iconic Elisha Cuthbert, was announced as part of the 2022 SXSW showcase. Now today the Southby and FrightFest selection has been acquired by Shudder, Deadline reports.
The Cellar is an Irish horror film from visionary filmmaker Brendan Muldowney (Pilgrimage). The title stars Elisha Cuthbert (Happy Endings, The Girl Next Door) alongside Eoin Macken (Till Death). The Dread project arrives April 15th via Shudder in North America, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. AMC Network affiliate RLJE Films is taking care of a theatrical release.
But first things first, The Cellar doors open at the renowned SXSW Film Festival on March 12th. It takes part in the festival’s Midnighters showcase alongside some truly killer programming. It will also haunt Glasgow as the closing film at this year’s FrightFest.
There’s something in The Cellar
The Cellar “centers on Keira Woods (Cuthbert), whose daughter mysteriously vanishes in the cellar of their new house in the country. Keira soon discovers there is an ancient and powerful entity controlling their home that she will have to face or risk losing her family’s souls forever.” The film is an expansion of Muldowney’s shocking short film The Ten Steps and was shot on location in Ireland.
“The Cellar is a riveting story that we think will appeal to both horror lovers and broader audiences alike, and we’re delighted to work with RLJE Films to bring it to the widest possible audience,” Shudder GM Craig Engler shared with Deadline. “Brendan and this talented team have crafted a dark and haunting tale that we’re excited to share with audiences this April.”
Lastly, SXSW opens its door again this year for an in-person festival running March 11-20 in Austin. Keep an eye on Dread Central for live coverage of this unmissable festival.
