This Disturbing Creepypasta Is Back And It’s Freaking Everybody Out

SCP

The SCP Foundation, which stands for Secure, Contain, Protect, is a secret organization that supposedly documents paranormal and supernatural phenomena. All of their files are kept on their website, with are said to be strictly confidential. While a fictional site meant to be a place for creative writing, its stories have terrified the internet since 2008. Every creature is designated with SCP-their file number, then have a pseudonym that better defines what said creature is. Some particularly notable SCPs are SCP-3008 (a perfectly normal Ikea), SCP-087 (The Staircase), and SCP-055 (the self-keeping secret). These strange objects and creatures have inspired video games such as Control, fan art, and much more. They are creepypastas with more structure and a slight air of believability.

But one of the most popular of these phenomena is SCP-173, or the statue (it’s also affectionately known as Peanut). According to the SCP site, these are the origins and destructive abilities of the being:

Origin is as of yet unknown. It is constructed from concrete and rebar with traces of Krylon brand spray paint. SCP-173 is animate and extremely hostile. The object cannot move while within a direct line of sight. Line of sight must not be broken at any time with SCP-173. Personnel assigned to enter container are instructed to alert one another before blinking. Object is reported to attack by snapping the neck at the base of the skull, or by strangulation. In the event of an attack, personnel are to observe Class 4 hazardous object containment procedures.

It’s essentially a version of the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who, but somehow much more frightening. Something to do with all the concrete and rebar. The statue is one dangerous creature and became incredibly popular across the internet. And now, SCP-173 is in the limelight again, spurring artists across the internet to draw their interpretations of the monster. Why? It all boils down to a simple issue of copyright and fair use.

The original image of SCP-173, titled Untitled 2004, is actually the oldest one on the site according to the SCP Foundation, who stated the image “orginat[ed] with SCP itself on 4chan in 2007.” However, it contained a sculpture by Japanese artist Izumi Kato, who copyrighted the image. While he let the site use his work as long as it wouldn’t be used for commercial purposes, the growing popularity of the site has made such a guarantee nigh impossible. With that in mind, they made the decision to remove the image.

So, incredible horror artists around the world have taken to Twitter to share their own interpretations of the creature. Here are just a few of our favorites:
