Sips and Scares: A Scary Drunk Streaming Guide
I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t enjoy a good drink every week, but especially during a week when there’s a national drinking holiday. I decided I wanted to keep my drinking festive for this third pandemic St. Patrick’s Day in a row. So I reached out to my friends over at Shaken Not Scared to help me achieve my dreams (again). We present to you an Irish Horror Streaming Guide with a few drinks so strong that you’ll think you went to the parade.
Caveat (2020)
Where You Can Watch: Shudder
A drifter suffering from memory loss takes a job looking after a troubled woman in an abandoned house on an isolated island. I don’t know why no one wanted to turn more lights on in this creepy house with the possessed toy. I also don’t know why we’re living in this Silent Hill filter if we’re not going to do Silent Hill things. This movie was a truly confusing slow burn. I’m not sure what’s true, or why no one takes away the toy rabbit’s drums. This is why when I go back in, I want to take a fancy cocktail with me.
Caveat Drink: The Demonic Rabbit
Ingredients:
- 2 oz Bailey’s Salted Caramel Irish Cream
- .5 Oz Jameson Irish Whiskey
- 2 oz Coffee
- Garnish: Peeps Bunny
Instructions:
Combine Bailey’s, Jameson, and coffee in a shaker with ice. Strain into a coupe glass and garnish with peeps bunny (or chocolate bunny if preferred).
Citadel (2012)
Where You Can Watch: The Roku Channel, Tubi, Vudu, and Youtube
After a gang of teens kills a pregnant woman, they resurface years later for her daughter. The girl’s father teams up with a priest to try to save her. This apartment complex looks like the start of a “My First Slumlord” story and I was more worried about what they might catch from the hallway than the possibility of violence. I went straight to Google to see if my understanding of the word “Citadel” was wrong and/or if it means hellscape in Ireland. Because this building is the true horror of the film and I feel like I need a shot of whiskey and tetanus shot just looking at it.
The Cured (2017)
Where You Can Watch: Hulu
A cure for zombieism has been found so the previously infected can reenter society. However, not everyone is ready to forgive and forget what their loved ones did while they were infected. I think this movie offers a lot. We get Elliot Page, zombies, we get a lot of metaphors/symbolism for real-life movements, and we also get some very thinly veiled Queer coding. There are a lot of betrayals as we figure out who the real enemy is and if all of the cured deserve a second chance. While it feels longer than it is, I gotta admit there’s something here that keeps bringing me back.
The Cured Drink: The Unlucky
Ingredients:
- 1 oz Blue Curacao
- 1 oz Coconut Cream
- 4 oz Pineapple Juice
- 4 oz Orange Juice
- 1.5 oz Jameson Irish Whiskey
- Cocktail Cherries
Instructions:
Combine 1 oz blue curacao and 1 oz Coconut Cream in a shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a glass. Combine 4 oz pineapple juice, 4 oz orange juice, and 1.5 oz Whiskey in a blender with plenty of ice and blend. Pour in glass on top of Blue curacao/Coconut mixture. Top with Cherry juice from cocktail Cherries.
The Hole In The Ground (2019)
Where You Can Watch: Showtime
A single mom starts to worry that the boy in her home is not actually her son. She thinks it might be linked to that weird sinkhole in the forest. This movie is incredibly engaging even with such a simple premise. However, there I was, glued to my TV waiting to see if the evil doppelganger child was about to get away with murder. This movie was a stressful time and reassured me that if I ever get to visit Ireland, I don’t belong in the countryside. It also reminded me that nothing good has ever come out of a sinkhole.
Rawhead Rex (1986)
Where You Can Watch: Shudder
A creature named Rawhead is awakened and goes on a violent rampage. I don’t think this is the movie Clive Barker wanted but it’s the movie we probably deserve. I can’t explain how watching this leather-clad plastic dinosaur creature run through kitchens and snatch men up gave me so much joy. All I know is that I’m still laughing about it a year later and that’s what really matters. Is this a great movie? No. Is it the perfect movie to have a few drinks and laugh at? Hell yes.
RawHead Rex Drink: The Kinky Demon
Ingredients:
- 1.5 oz Jameson Irish Whiskey
- .5 oz Prickly pear syrup
- 1 oz Lemon Juice
- .5 oz Simple Syrup
- one egg White
Ingredients:
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker (without Ice). Shake vigorously to break up the egg white. Add ice and shake again. Strain into glass
Honorable Mentions:
Isolation (2005)
Where You Can Watch: The Roku Channel and Tubi
On a remote Irish farm, five people become unwilling participants in an experiment that goes nightmarishly wrong. I didn’t get around to watching this movie but it looks like the kind of early aughts shenanigans I like to see. It might even be a nice little appetizer before checking out X this weekend or getting into any isolated farm films you’re watching because I don’t know your life.
Wake Wood (2009)
Where You Can Watch: Amazon Prime, The Roku Channel, Tubi, and Vudu
The parents of a girl who was killed by a savage dog are granted the opportunity to spend three days with their deceased daughter. I’m really sad I ran out of time before getting to this one. This description only gives me enough to make me think they’re about to have a ghost kid on their hands and that’s terrifying in this economy.
