In Alex Garland’s ‘Men’, Shapeshifters Haunt The Forest [Trailer]
After the dread-filled teaser for visionary filmmaker Alex Garland’s Men dropped, the internet was abuzz with theories and excitement about A24’s latest foray into genre. Starring Academy Award nominee Jessie Buckley, Men hit all the right notes for the art-house horror crowd. Now, A24 has granted us a full trailer for the madness that lurks in the idyllic English countryside.
The plot synopsis for Men is as follows:
In the aftermath of a personal tragedy, Harper (Jessie Buckley) retreats alone to the beautiful English countryside, hoping to have found a place to heal. But someone or something from the surrounding woods appears to be stalking her. What begins as simmering dread becomes a fully-formed nightmare, inhabited by her darkest memories and fears in Alex Garland’s feverish, shape-shifting new horror film.
Watch the trailer:
The trailer shows Rory Kinnear playing, well, men. It’s him versus Buckley as his various forms torment her. There are also illusions to the Green Man, a Celtic figure that symbolizes rebirth. He’s also the subject of several folk horror films. Perhaps we”re getting a proper folk horror from Garland with his own horrific twist. There are also allusions to the Garden of Eden and the Forbidden Fruit, so there is also the classic folk horror tension between nature and Christianity.
Men comes to theaters on May 20.
