This Mind-Melting Horror Film Is Now Shudder’s Most Streamed 2022 Premiere!

It’s rare to get a peek behind the curtain at Shudder. The genre-focused streaming platform is a Godsend for horror fans, so it’s always fascinating to get treated to a taste of their inner workings. Last week Shudder announced the most streamed digital premiere on the platform for 2022, and it’s a definite shocker. Mad God now claims the title, and we couldn’t be more pleased.
The animated fantasia of horrors Mad God hails from Academy Award-winning animator and FX specialist Phil Tippett. This extraordinary title took the filmmaker over thirty years to produce, and it finally hit select theaters and the AMC Network-operated Shudder on June 16th. The three-decades-in-the-making animated horror project is unlike anything else you’ve ever seen, marking this accomplishment as a good day in horror history.
Long before its Shudder drop, Tippett first started developing Mad God back in 1990, just about when he wrapped work on the always watchable Robocop 2. But the creator had no choice but to pull the brakes on the film so he could produce the historic and extremely culturally significant dinosaur effects on Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park.
Years after Jurassic Park, the effects master signed into Kickstarter to get the proper funding he needed to finish Mad God. Ten years after that and Mad God is finally in the bag and wowing audiences all over the world. Mad God could be described as an experimentally animated horror show set in an apocalyptic hellscape. The unique title saw its World Premiere at the Locarno Film Festival on August 5th 2021.
Tippett is personally responsible for the special effects on some of the most important blockbusters ever produced. He has contributed to the original Star Wars trilogy, Starship Troopers, The Twilight Saga and is the effects captain behind The Mandalorian.
