The “Grossest” Movie Ti West, The Director of ‘X’, Has Ever Seen

Ti West is best known for directing some of the most memorable indie horror titles of the past fifteen years. The influence of his breakout success The House of the Devil can still be felt in horror today. Follow-up The Innkeepers has also achieved cult status, and I argue it’s got one of the scariest endings in recent memory. And of course, there’s his latest release X which made a major splash with its A24-supported theatrical run earlier this year. Far Out Magazine recently sourced an interview with the horror filmmaker about one of the nastiest (if not THE nastiest) movies he’s ever seen via Rotten Tomatoes. And it’s no real shocker.

According to West, the grossest film he’s ever experienced is the Peter Jackson splatterfest Bad Taste. Shot on a budget of merely $25,000, Jackson’s 1987 foray into cult carnage was certainly on a different scale from his eventual Lord of the Rings trilogy. Cited by many fans as being nearly as nasty as it gets, Bad Taste was a prime example of an indie filmmaker making the most out of a small budget. Not so different from Ti West and his own early filmography.

Ti West on Peter Jackson’s Bad Taste

It’s one of the grossest movies ever, so it was always the benchmark of, like, “Is there a more disgusting movie than this?” And also not a lot of people had seen it so it was like a badge of honor. But more importantly, when I decided that maybe movies was something I wanted to do, that movie was actually the first movie that I think made me think I could maybe do this.

Ti West’s next directorial effort will be the X prequel story, Pearl. The latest horror outing from A24 is co-written with Mia Goth. It stars Mia Goth, David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro. The film arrives in theater’s September 16th.
