‘Hereditary’ Star Signs On To Blumhouse ‘The Exorcist’ Trilogy

The Exorcist

Between her haunting performance in Hereditary to her powerful work in Mass, Anne Dowd continues to prove she’s an acting tour de force. Now, she’s continuing her genre work with David Gordon Green and Blumhouse’s upcoming The Exorcist trilogy. The Hollywood Reporter reported that Dowd has signed on for the first film in the series.

In Hereditary, Dowd plays secret cultist Joan who lures Annie Graham (Toni Collette) into her orbit with her seeming maternal charms. Dowd strikes a terrifying balance of kind and downright evil. So we can’t wait to see her role in The Exorcist.

Blumhouse’s The Exorcist is a trilogy that follows the events of the original 1973 film. So we aren’t getting a reboot, but sequels proper. But will the new films will address the original sequels? Green told Total Film:

“It’s not inaccurate [that it will be a sequel to the original film]. I like all the Exorcist movies.“And not only do I like them, I think they can all fall into the acceptable mythology for what I’m doing. It’s not like I’m saying, ‘Pretend that The Exorcist 2 never happened.’ That’s fine to exist. They’re all fine to exist, and I enjoy all of them.”

In the first installment, Leslie Odom, Jr. stars as a man whose child is possessed by a demon. In a quest for answers, his character tracks down Chris MacNeil, who will be played again by Ellen Burstyn.
