‘The Fall of the House of Usher’: Everything We Know So Far About Mike Flanagan’s New Series

Mike Flanagan

Master of modern horror Mike Flanagan has the Midas touch. Since he came on the scene with Absentia, he has continued to hit it out of the park with each subsequent effort. Flanagan has enjoyed success with feature film efforts like Oculus, Hush, Gerald’s Game, and Doctor Sleep. He’s also demonstrated a knack for the serialized television format with multiple hit series under his belt to date.

In the wake of the success of his Netflix original series, The Haunting of Hill House, the streamer struck an exclusive deal with the auteur creator to oversee the production of multiple programs. Flanagan followed Hill House with The Haunting of Bly Manor and Black Mass. Next up is The Midnight Club. From there, the director has begun work on a loose reimagining of the Edgar Allan Poe short story, “The Fall of the House of Usher”. The series will be inspired by the titular story but will also incorporate themes pulled from some of Poe’s works. No word, just yet, on exactly which of the macabre writer’s other efforts will be incorporated. But rest assured that we will clue you in the moment we know more.

Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” follows an unnamed narrator as he is summoned to the home of his friend, Roderick Usher. Upon arrival, the narrator discovers that Roderick and his sister are the only family members left alive. Both are afflicted with an illness that Roderick believes pertains to an enchantment surrounding the family home and surrounding areas.

Now that you’re up to speed, let’s dive in and reveal everything we know, to date about Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher

The limited series will consist of eight episodes

Flanagan will direct four of the series’ eight episodes, which will be entirely unrelated to the director’s previous work. Flanagan will also executive-produce the project through his company, Intrepid Pictures. Michael Fimognari will direct the remaining four episodes. Trevor Macy, Emmy Grinwis, and Fimognari will serve as executive producers on the project.

The cast will be nothing short of epic

The series’ casting roster is phenomenal, to say the least. Frank Langella (Dracula (1979)) was originally set to topline as Roderick Usher. However, the actor was later fired from the show after misconduct allegations. Langella was then replaced by Bruce Greenwood (Super 8). Mary McDonnell (Donnie Darko) will costar as Roderick’s sister, Madeline. Carl Lumbly has been tapped to play investigator C. Auguste Dupin (who appears in several Poe stories, dating back to “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”). We don’t know precisely who he will play but Mark Hamill has been cast as “a character surprisingly at home in the shadows”. Regular Flanagan collaborator Carla Gugino (Gerald’s Game) has also signed on for a starring role in the series. No word, just yet, on exactly which role she will take on.

Additional cast members include: Henry Thomas (E.T., Cloak & Dagger), Samantha Sloyan (Hush), T’Nia Miller (The Haunting of Bly Manor), Rahul Kohli (iZombie), Kate Siegel (Midnight Mass), Sauriyan Sapkota (The Midnight Club), Zach Gilford (The Purge: Anarchy), Katie Parker (Absentia), Michael Trucco (Battlestar Galactica), Malcolm Goodwin (iZombie), and Crystal Balint (Prison Break

The series is currently in post-production

According to IMDb, the show is in post. The project was shot in Vancouver, Canada earlier this year and concluded filming last month. So, it’s safe to assume that The Fall of the House of Usher will bow sometime after The Midnight Club, which is currently slated for an October 7th debut on Netflix.

If I were to guess, I would say the series is likely to bow in the first half of 2023. But stay tuned to the site in the coming months, as we will update you on that as soon as we learn more.
