Could ’28 Months Later’ Finally Happen? Danny Boyle Is ‘Very Tempted’ To Direct New Sequel
Word around the internet is that we are getting closer to getting the greatly anticipated 28 Months Later film. After the success of 2002’s 28 Days Later, most of us wanted more time in the world. We got a 2007 follow-up 28 Weeks Later, that saw neither director Danny Boyle nor star Cillian Murphy return.
While we were grateful for the sequel most of us have been hoping for a threequel. A movie that would bring back the original director and star.

For those of you that don’t remember, or somehow missed this iconic film, 28 Days Later followed Jim (played by Murphy) who awakens from a coma to find his city deserted. While he was unconscious for a month, animal rights activists unleashed an infected chimp which caused a “rage” virus to spread throughout the city. Jim finds a group of survivors and they attempt to find a safe place away from the zombies and the worst of humankind.
With the 20th anniversary upon us, these dreams have been resurrected. In a recent NME interview, Murphy was asked about his feelings toward returning to make this series a trilogy.
“I think there’s a problem with that, in that I’m 20 years older…” laughs Murphy. “But every time I do bump into Danny or Alex I always mention it. Because I showed it to my kids recently, some Halloween about four or five years ago, and they loved it. It really stands up, which is amazing for a film that’s 20 years old. So yeah, I love the idea and it’s very appealing to me.”
During the interview, Boyle shared that Alex Garland, who wrote the original film, has already written the script for 28 Months Later. He even said, “I’d be very tempted [to direct it]. It feels like a very good time actually. It’s funny, I hadn’t thought about it until you just said it and I remembered Bang, this script! which is again set in England, very much about England. Anyway, we’ll see… who knows?”

Boyle went on to explain why now might be a perfect time for 28 Months Later to come to fruition, “It might come back into focus because one of the things that’s happening in the business at the moment is it has to be a big reason for you to go to the cinema, because there are less and less reasons.
It’s hard for companies distributing films and for cinema chains to show films, they’re struggling to get people into the cinema unless it’s something like Top Gun: Maverick or a Marvel. But a third part would get people in, if it was half-decent.
While nothing concrete about 28 Months Later is on the table yet, it feels good to know that there is a script written and that Boyle and Murphy would be into returning to the English zombie apocalypse that started a fire in all of our hearts.
