Everything We Know About ‘M3GAN’ So Far
If the Annabelle franchise has taught us anything, it’s that people lose their minds over a killer doll. In fact, people lost their collective mind to the tune of more than $306 million at the global box office for Annabelle: Creation, the most lucrative installment in the blockbuster franchise. But hey, that’s enough talk about Annabelle. We’re here to dish on the other James Wan-produced killer doll film. That’s right, we’re celebrating the upcoming release of M3GAN by sharing everything we know about the film at this stage.
M3GAN stands for Model 3 Generative Android. The titular ‘character’ is a lifelike doll that can learn from interactions with her playmate. The film follows Gemma, a roboticist who is unexpectedly given custody of her orphaned niece, Cady. Overwhelmed by the prospect of being a guardian, Gemma introduces Cady to the M3GAN prototype. With it, she hopes to provide comfort and companionship to the child in a dark and overwhelming time. Gemma quickly learns, however, that the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry. More specifically, Gemma discovers that the prototype she has worked so hard to bring to life has violent tendencies and a mind of its own.
The flick was recently pushed forward by Universal Pictures and will now enjoy a January 6 release date. So, without further ado, we are pleased to present you with everything we know so far about M3GAN.
M3GAN will not have a supernatural component.
The upcoming picture is taking a similar approach to the 2019 reboot of Child’s Play, in that it doesn’t have a supernatural angle. The flick will lean more into science fiction than the paranormal. But that’s not to say that M3GAN won’t be scary. Regardless of what drives the doll’s sinister behavior, she still appears ready to bring the terror. And you don’t have to take my word for it. Check the trailer in the player below to see just how creepy the titular character can be without the aid of any supernatural interference.
The film features an impressive roster of talented creatives working behind the scenes.
Wunderkind James Wan will produce the project via his Atomic Monster label and Jason Blum is on board to produce the picture through the Blumhouse banner. Screenwriter Akela Cooper (Malignant) penned the script for this upcoming effort based on an original story idea by Wan.
Ryan Turek, Allison Williams, Mark Katchur, Judson Scott, Adam Hendricks, Michael Clear, and Greg Gilreath are all on deck to executive produce the project.
M3GAN will showcase a cast of up-and-comers and recognizable names alike.
Allison Williams (Get Out) will star as Gemma and Violet McGraw (The Haunting of Hill House) is slated to play Gemma’s niece, Cady.
Jenna Davis (Lisa Frankenstein) will be the voice of the M3GAN doll and newcomer Amie Donald will appear onscreen (presumably with the assistance of VFX) as the titular creation. Additional cast includes Ronny Chieng (Godzilla vs. Kong) in an unnamed role; Brian Jordan Alvarez (Will & Grace) will play Cole; Jen Van Epps (No Exit) will costar as Tess; and Arlo Green (Cowboy Bebop) will appear as Ryan.
The film is sure to be scary, but don’t expect too much in the way of graphic violence.
M3GAN has been rated PG-13 for violent content, a suggestive reference, terror, and language. I know horror fans aren’t always big on PG-13 horror. But with James Wan and Akela Cooper on board, I am optimistic that the film will deliver the goods.
