This New “Absolutely mind-blowing” Netflix Horror Series Already Has Fans “Intrigued and hooked”

In 2017, Netflix released the twisty, dark psychological thriller series Dark. It promptly broke the internet’s collective psyche with its tale of time travel, alternate dimensions, and dangerous secrets.

Now, the Dark series creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese are back with another cerebral series, 1899, which just hit Netflix today. And according to Twitter, it’s already blowing viewers’ minds.

The new series follows “immigrants on a steamship traveling from London to New York [who] get caught up in a mysterious riddle after finding a second vessel adrift on the open sea.

Odar and Friese opted for a horror period piece this time and the poster art is giving us Bermuda Triangle vibes.

According to Twitter, 1899 is a bit of a slow burn, but just like Dark is an utter mindfuck.

Check out some of the early reactions below:

Some viewers are even already declaring 1899 as one of the best shows on Netflix. This speaks to not only how much people loved Dark, but also how much viewers crave a bizarre and puzzling horror experience.

While 1899 is a period piece, it’s rooted in contemporary issues in Europe. Friese told Deadline in 2021:

“[1899] really had to be a European collaboration, not just cast but also crew. We felt that with the past years of Europe being on the decline, we wanted to give a counterpoint to Brexit, and to nationalism rising in different countries, to go back to that idea of Europe and Europeans working and creating together.”
