The Best Horror Movies Streaming Now on Hulu
Last Updated: January 7, 2024
Hulu is kicking off the new year with a buffet of genre titles. The streamer is helping us play catch-up with some of the underseen 2024 movies like Arcadian, Humane, The Silent Hour, and Mother’s Instinct. The app will also give Insidious fans a chance to rewatch the first three franchise entries in one place, which is very rare. They have also seen us talking about American Psycho on social media and seemingly think some of the loudest people should rewatch the movie before sharing more wild takes. So, Hulu is that girl this month, and I had fun carving out five titles that I am most excited to check out or revisit this January. Enough talking about it though. Let us get into what they have programmed this month already!
Check out my top picks on Hulu this January.
The Bad Shepard (dir. Geo Santini)
While on a hunting trip, a group of friends accidentally run over a woman carrying a bag of cash. As they try to figure out what to do, a strange man arrives and further complicates things. Many of us are still playing catch-up with 2024 titles that flew under our radar. The Bad Shepard checks all those boxes on my bingo card, so I am excited to see if this is the perfect snowy thriller for this January. More importantly, it sounds like a weird mix of I Know What You Did Last Summer and A Small Fortune, so I need to know more. I understand if watching men make bad choices in the woods is not your thing. However, I am nosey and would like to see who gets killed, who walks away with the money, and what the victim of their hit-and-run was running from.
Goosebumps: The Vanishing
The second season follows twins sent to spend the summer with their dad in Brooklyn. They soon stumble upon secrets, which causes them to get entangled with a 1994 case where four teenagers disappeared. The first season of Goosebumps was the best adaptation of R. L. Stine’s beloved work. It was aimed at the youth but a little darker. It also had a fantastic soundtrack and a pretty amazing cast. So, I am sad we are getting David Schwimmer instead of Chaos King Justin Long this season. However, I am excited to have Ana Ortiz in the genre and back on our TVs. I am making it my business to check out the new season, and I am keeping my fingers crossed that it is even half as fun as the first season. Or at least that the soundtrack goes just as hard because we need more of that energy in 2025. All eight episodes will hit Hulu on Friday, January 10.
John Wick (dir. Chad Stahelski)
A former hitman uses his skills to go after the men who killed his dog. The John Wick films are so fun and violent that the replay value is high. It does not hurt that Keanu Reeves is one of the most charming hitmen this subgenre has ever seen. If you have not taken this journey with Mr. Wick, I highly suggest it. There is a lot of stylized violence and many familiar faces. Plus, you already know not to get too attached to the puppy. Hulu will also add the second and third films if you want more time in the John Wick world. You can catch the fourth movie on Starz if you are a completionist. Because I watched the films on a plane, I look forward to watching them in the comfort of my home with full-sized snacks and beverages.
Paradise
A wealthy community where the world’s most prominent individuals live is rocked when a shocking murder occurs. 2025 is gifting us a thriller led by Sterling K. Brown at the top of the year. Brown’s character is head of security for the President and the last person to see him alive. This sounds spicy, and I want it on my TV now. The eight-episode season will drop the first three episodes on Hulu on January 28 before easing into a weekly schedule. The dead President is played by James Marsden, which will cause many of my fellow millennials to feel really old. I think this has the potential to be a good time, and just complicated enough to keep us distracted during the winter of our discontent.
Sleep (dir. Jason Yu)
A pregnant woman must figure out why her husband is suddenly putting their small family in danger every time he goes to sleep. Sleep is one of my favorite horror movies of 2024 and had one of my favorite performances. I want to see Jung Yu-mi lead so many more horror movies after this, and I am still obsessed with her character almost a year later. After telling people how good this movie is for so long, I am so excited they can finally check it out when it arrives on Hulu on January 21. This chilling film deserves to find a bigger audience. Sleep avoids taking any easy avenues to give us something completely unique, alarming, and cool. This movie is after my heart in so many ways. It is sadly one of the last times we’ll see Lee Sun-kyun (Parasite) on screen.
