‘Scream 2’ Star Elise Neal Was Originally the Killer

Elise Neal, Scream 2

Scream 2 co-star Elise Neal has taken to Twitter to share some fun Scream 2 facts with fans. In the film, Neal co-starred as Hallie, Sidney Prescott’s new college roommate and potential suspect. Vacillating between comic relief and genuine concern for her new pal, Hallie’s last stand was unfortunate. After surviving a terrifying set piece involving a crashed car, Hallie insisted she and Sidney run. Sidney insisted on going back—“Stupid people go back”—and shortly thereafter, Ghostface inexplicably appears to kill her.

On Twitter, Neal shared several little behind-the-scenes notes. Interestingly, Neal’s blue dress in the first act was allegedly disliked by many in the cast, something Neal wasn’t aware of until afterwards. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, was the concession that originally, Hallie was scripted as one of the killers.

Though this changed before shooting began on account of script leaks, a common occurrence in the franchise, there are clear shades of the original intent throughout. Neal also notes the character at first not being written for a Black actress though later getting the part on account of several past auditions.

Scream 2 opened in theaters less than one year after the first. Following a successful test screening, the sequel was moved into development before the first even finished its theatrical bow. Bigger, bloodier, and more meta than ever, it’s widely regarded as the best sequel in the series. It would be several years after that Scream 3 would arrive to wrap the trilogy, and then an additional decade before the series appeared again.
