Hulu’s ‘February Favorite’ Horror Movie Is A Scary And “Criminally under-discussed” Gem

Hulu users take note. Coming in ninth place on Dread Central’s Top 10 Horror Movies of 2022 was Neil LaBute’s sleeper release House of Darkness. Featuring superb duel lead performances from Justin Long and Kate Bosworth, this underappreciated spookshow was unleashed mere months before Long’s Scream King renaissance was cemented with Barbarian.

Now it seems as though House of Darkness is getting its due respect, as Hulu has selected it as their February Favorite for horror. And I’m personally glad to see it.

Highlighting the intimate bloodstained fairytale for our year-end list, I described it as follows:

“Criminally under-discussed, this gothic shadow play should keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat from start to finish. A great deal of its success is owed to a lead performance by Kate Bosworth, who expertly fills the space with menace, and the direction by LaBute, who choreographs his leads with hypnotic ease. When push comes to shove, it’s somehow still a shock when the story takes its final few twists of the knife.”

In House of Darkness, “Driving home to her secluded estate after meeting at a local bar, a player out to score thinks his beautiful, mysterious date will be another casual hook-up. While getting acquainted, their flirtation turns playful, sexy, and sinister. Hoping to get lucky, his luck may have just run out.”
