Russell Crowe Is ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’ In Unholy First Trailer [Watch]
The power of Christ compels you… to go see Julius Avery’s The Pope’s Exorcist when it releases nationwide on April 14. In The Pope’s Exorcist:
Father Gabriele Amorth, chief exorcist for the Vatican, battles Satan and innocent-possessing demons. A detailed portrait of a priest who performed more than 100,000 exorcisms in his lifetime.
Sounds like a great time, especially with Avery behind the camera, whom fans might recognize from 2018’s ingenuous Overlord, a gory extravaganza of practical effects and Nazi monsters. Russell Crowe stars as Father Gabriele Amorth, with Ralph Ineson (The Witch) lending his voice to the central demon. Horror fans might surely recognize Alex Essoe (Starry Eyes, Midnight Mass ) and Daniel Zovatto (Don’t Breathe, It Follows) among the cast as well.
The MPA has already rated The Pope’s Exorcist, giving it an “R” for “Violent content, language, sexual references, and some nudity.” Like some of the best demonic shockers before it, The Pope’s Exorcist is allegedly based on the true story of Father Gabriele Amorth, an Italian priest said to have performed over 100,000 exorcisms in real life.
Watch the trailer for The Pope’s Exorcist:
The script comes courtesy of Chester Hastings, R. Dean McCreary, and Evan Spiliotopoulos. If the trailer is any indication, this one’s going to be a remarkably good time. In recent years, the possession subgenre has fallen out of favor. Once terribly profitable, it is now principally consigned to video-on-demand outlets and streaming (thanks, The Devil Inside). With The Pope’s Exorcist, possession horror will be back on the big screen in all its grand, R-rated glory.
