Bruce Campbell Talks ‘Army of Darkness’ with Post Mortem: “We kind of killed the franchise”

Post Mortem with Mick Garris is getting groovy today in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Army of Darkness. The third entry of the Evil Dead franchise was a servant of chaos, becoming one of the most exciting cult classics in the history of genre cinema. Joining filmmaker Mick Garris on the Post Mortem slab this week are horror legends Bruce Campbell and Robert Tapert. While listening to today’s episode, it’s clear that Campbell and Tapert love the Evil Dead franchise, but they don’t mince words on how difficult the third film was to make.

According to franchise star Bruce Campbell, creating Army of Darkness was more torture than celebration. “I think we still have PTSD from that movie,” said Campbell while discussing the grueling conditions of making Army of Darkness with collaborator Robert Tapert. “It was a never-ending nightmare of a shoot.”

More fascinating information shared on the new Post Mortem episode is the behind-the-scenes drama affecting the film. From production running out of money to the studio playing political games with the producers and filmmakers, Army of Darkness was delayed two years before it was finally released in 1993. “We kind of killed the franchise. We killed it for 25 years. It was dead,” shared Campbell with love.

But Campbell, Tapert, and Raimi weren’t the only ones having a hard time on set. According to Cambell, the hundreds of extras on location were also feeling the heat. Two in particular. “They found one couple having sex in the castle in their skeleton outfits,” shared Campbell. “They were boning each other; that was our joke.”
