The Number One Documentary On Netflix Is A Controversial Mystery: “Someone out there knows what really happened”

For better or worse, Netflix is a true crime aficionado’s sweet, sweet haven. Chart-topping series such as Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal continue to enrapture viewers as Netflix wades deeper and deeper into the realm of shocking, impossible-to-believe true stories. Most recently, MH370: The Plane That Disappeared has dominated the charts. The title is currently topping the list of documentaries available on the streamer. The synopsis, per Netflix:

In 2014, a plane with 239 people aboard vanishes from all radar.

The docuseries allegedly dives into what they call one of modern history’s great mysteries, though some critics have taken umbrage with the series’ propensity for peddling unfounded conspiracy theories. The limited series uses “powerful archives to reconstruct the night of the disappearance, giving viewers the chance to explore three of the most contentious theories about the plane’s disappearance.”

Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 did disappear on March 8, 2014, resulting in the most expensive search in the history of aviation. It nearly destroyed Malaysian Airlines writ large, and nine years later, investigators are no closer to figuring out what happened than they were when the aircraft originally went missing.

Mismanaged from the start, both the investigation (and insurance payouts for surviving family members) were met with intense scrutiny. Perhaps most importantly, no one still really knows what happened to the aircraft. Critics have rightfully pointed out that the series, deliciously tantalizing as it might be, does little but muddy the waters. The conjecture ranges from hijackers to an inside job, though it never factually back up any of its most outlandish claims. Granted, conspiracy thrives in the unknown, and there’s something to be said for endeavoring to answer a genuine mystery. Far from dispositive, MH370: The Plane That Disappeared might confound more than illuminate. Check out what fans are saying below:
