Fans Are Shocked By The #1 Film On Netflix, Calling It “The Worst Movie Of 2017”

Mister police, you need to check out the number one thriller streaming on Netflix in the USA. In Tomas Alfredson’s The Snowman, adapted from the Jo Nesbø novel of the same name, Detective Harry Hole (yes, that’s really his name) contends with frosty murder as he tracks a serial killer down.

Per Netflix, “In snow-swept Norway, a damaged star detective follows a trail of dead bodies and sinister snowmen in search of a serial killer.” Michael Fassbender stars as the aforementioned Hole, with a supporting cast of star genre players, including Rebecca Ferguson (Doctor Sleep) and Charlotte Gainsbourg (Antichrist).

A notorious critical flop (The Snowman melted its critical score to a paltry 6% on Rotten Tomatoes), Alfredson’s serial killer epic has nonetheless endured as a camp oddity. The posters are the stuff of legend, and the ever-reliable Michael Fassbender turns in an outrageously dour yet committed performance as the beleaguered detective hoping to catch a killer. Is it good? Not necessarily. Yet, The Snowman never bores. It’s one of those movies audiences need to see to believe, a fact confirmed by its chart-topping status on Netflix.

The response is all over the place, and that’s exactly what The Snowman would want. Maybe the titular snowman is responsible for cooking the books. No one really knows, but to viewers’ surprise, it’s true. One of the century’s biggest flops is now hitting it big on the streamer. The news comes on the heels of Netflix’s recent announcement to discontinue their DVD rental service this fall.

In the midst of an ever-shifting streaming landscape, it’s remarkable to see something like The Snowman find an audience five years after release. That’s the magic of Netflix, it seems.

What do you think? Did you catch The Snowman years ago? If not, do you plan to check it out now? If so, let me know on Twitter @ChadisCollins. Go on, Mister Audience.
