Guillermo del Toro Calls This Underseen Horror Gem: ‘One of the great ones’

Guillermo del Toro once took to Twitter to show his love for a Canadian psychological horror film that demands to be seen. He opened the app to encourage people to check out Pontypool. 

According to the GDT, it’s “One of the great ones.” See his full Tweet below:

While no one is surprised that Guillermo del Toro has excellent taste, it’s still nice to see him point people in the direction of this underappreciated film.

In the film, a radio host interprets the possible outbreak of a deadly virus that infects the small Ontario town he is stationed in.

Pontypool was written by Tony Burgess and is based on his novel Pontypool Changes Everything. It was directed by Bruce McDonald. It stars Stephen McHattie, Lisa Houle, Georgina Reilly, and Hrant Alianak.

The film is available on both IFC Films Unlimited and AMC+ through Amazon. Or you can rent it as del Toro so kindly suggested.

While it might be too soon for some of us to check in on horror movies about viruses, this is one of the films that should be on the list for when we can dive back into that pool. 

Pontypool managed to pick up a very loyal, albeit small, fan base when it premiered at Toronto International Film Festival in 2008. 

A sequel has been teased for some time now. However, there have been no updates or announcements. Which means we should not get our hopes up.
