The 3rd annual Critics’ Choice Television Awards were handed out last night, and we’re pleased to report that horror did pretty well for itself – as did Tatiana Maslany, the breakout star of “Orphan Black.”
The Critics’ Choice Awards were given out by the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA), and while “American Horror Story: Asylum” got shut out in the Best Movie or Mini-Series category by “Behind the Candelabra,” two of its supporting players received some well deserved recognition:
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A MOVIE OR MINI-SERIES
• Zachary Quinto (“American Horror Story: Asylum”) – FX
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A MOVIE OR MINI-SERIES
• Sarah Paulson (“American Horror Story: Asylum”) – FX
What made us happiest, however, was Maslany’s win. No, “Orphan Black” isn’t horror in the pure sense, but there’s a lot about the show that genre fans would appreciate, not least of which is Maslany’s incredible performance as not just one, two, or even three characters but SEVEN! And that’s just in the first season! Read on for more about her accomplishment, and for the full list of winners, visit the Critics’ Choice website.
The Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA) is a partner organization to the Broadcast Film Critics Association. BTJA includes TV, radio, and Internet journalists who cover television on a regular basis.
From the Press Release:
Tatiana Maslany – star of BBC America’s “Orphan Black” – took home one of the biggest Critics’ Choice Television Awards last night after being named Best Actress in a Drama Series by the Broadcast Television Journalist Association.
“Tatiana Maslany is truly television’s brightest new star,” commented Perry Simon, General Manager, BBC America. “Her tour de force performance on ‘Orphan Black’ is richly deserving of this honor, and we are thrilled that the TV critics have recognized her exceptional talent.”
This was Maslany’s first Critics’ Choice Award nomination and first win for her acclaimed “Orphan Black” performance in which she plays seven roles. The Best Actress category included Claire Danes, Vera Farmiga, Juliana Margulies, Elizabeth Moss, and Keri Russell. Maslany also served as a presenter at the Awards Ceremony held last night in Los Angeles.
The Critics’ Choice win comes on the heels of Tatiana’s Television Critics Association Award nomination for Individual Achievement in Drama, announced earlier this week. TCA also nominated “Orphan Black” in the New Program category.
Free episodes of “Orphan Black” are available now on Video on Demand and can be purchased on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Xbox Live, VUDU, and Sony PSN. “Orphan Black: Season One” arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on July 16.
