It seems Stephen King paused his current television binges to watch a film that just hit theaters. We’re glad he did because his Tweet reminded us we should check it out too.

King took to Twitter to shower compliments onto the team behind The Lesson. Stephen described it as, “Cold, smart, and suspenseful. Excellent acting and a nicely timed twist at the end.”

Now that Stephen King has raised awareness about this Tribeca Film Festival gem, let us dive into this British thriller.

Rotten Tomatoes Synopsis

“Liam (Daryl McCormack), an aspiring and ambitious young writer, eagerly accepts a tutoring position at the family estate of his idol, renowned author J.M. Sinclair (Academy Award nominee Richard E. Grant). But soon, Liam realizes that he is ensnared in a web of family secrets, resentment, and retribution. Sinclair, his wife Hélène (Academy Award nominee Julie Delpy), and their son Bertie (Stephen McMillan) all guard a dark past, one that threatens Liam’s future as well as their own. As the lines between master and protégé blur, class, ambition, and betrayal become a dangerous combination in this taut noir thriller.

The Lesson was directed by Alice Troughton and written by Alex MacKeith. The music was composed by Isobel Waller-Bridge.

This is Alice Troughton’s first feature. However, she has an extensive television resume dating back to 2002. While she has been at the helm of many popular shows, I’m nerding out over her episodes of Doctor Who.

Having Stephen King recommend The Lesson during the first week of its run is huge. However, you should watch the trailer below to see if you want to follow his lead this time.
