This ‘Dark’ Crime Series Is Now The Top-Charting Thriller On Amazon: “It’s perfection”

Dark Winds Amazon

The number 2 series on the Amazon media store this week is a disturbing crime thriller based on a series of novels by writer Tony Hillerman. Dark Winds, which just premiered its second season on July 30, has shot up the charts as new fans are introduced to the series and old fans catch up before binging the latest six-episode run. A critical darling, Dark Winds is a foray into an underrepresented people with all the procedural crime tropes audiences have come to love in recent years.

The synopsis, per Amazon, reads: The year is 1971. Joe Leaphorn of the Navajo Tribal Police must solve a series of unrelated crimes. He is joined by his new deputy, Jim Chee. Together, the two men battle the forces of evil and their own personal demons on the path to salvation.

Zahn McClarnon has achieved near universal acclaim for his portrayal of Joe Leaphorn, with critics highlighting the gravitas and commitment he brings to the role. Kiowa Gordon is no less phenomenal as Jim Chee, an FBI agent turned deputy who assists Leaphorn in the first season’s double-homicide investigation. The stakes only get higher from there as personal traumas coalesce with violence, secrets, and, of course, murder.

The Amazon series hasn’t been well received by everyone however. Of note, The Navajo Times published a review criticizing the series’ representation of Navajo people and their language. Despite the controversy, the series remains remarkably popular, the perfect quick-dose of procedural investigations and crime thriller grit. Check out what fans are saying about the series below:

Fans can’t seem to get enough, and as expected, McClarnon’s performance remains a highlight. It just might be worth another subscription. What do you think though? Have you had a chance to check out Dark Winds on Amazon? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
