Guillermo del Toro and Stephen King Both Praise New Horror Release: “It’s a throat-ripping good time”

Guillermo del Toro and Stephen King have some kind words for this week’s biggest horror release. André Øvredal’s (Trollhunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe) The Last Voyage of the Demeter sails into cinemas this weekend. Adapted from a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s seminal horror classic Dracula, the feature adaptation follows the crew of the titular Demeter as they sail from Transylvania to London with an unfortunate, vampiric stowaway. Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, and David Dastmalchian star, with horror perennial Javier Botet (Mama, It) playing the monstrous, practically-designed vampire. Check out what Guillermo del Toro had to say about The Last Voyage of the Demeter below:

He and André Øvredal previously collaborated on the 2019 adaptation of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, the first feature film to successfully translate Stephen Gammell’s generation defining illustrations for modern audiences. In a recent IGN interview, Øvredal hinted that the long-awaited sequel might finally be on its way.

In the meantime, Guillermo del Toro isn’t the only horror bigwig to sing the praises of Øvredal’s latest. Earlier this week, Stephen King took to Twitter to echo del Toro’s sentiments, calling The Last Voyage of the Demeter “a throat-ripping good time.” Check out what else he had to say below:

Truthfully, I can’t imagine how it could be anything less. It’s got Øvredal at the helm and Botet playing Dracula. It’s the kind of high concept, literary horror we don’t see enough of these days, and it’s the all too rare mid-budget studio offering that comes with some thematic (and gory) heft. Here’s hoping it proves a financial success, signaling to studios that more mid-budget horror is the way to go.
