‘Trick ‘R Treat 2’ – Sequel Is Now In “Active Development”

Trick ‘r treat

Fans have been clamoring for a sequel to Michael Dougherty’s cult classic anthology, Trick ‘r Treat, since the film was unceremoniously put out as a direct-to-video offering in 2009. The path to release for the long-gestured sequel has not been as expeditious as fans might like. But that doesn’t mean we don’t remain hopeful.

Dougherty first teased the possibility of a follow-up as early as 2009 in an MTV interview. In the years since, a series of stops and starts have kept the film in various stages of development hell.

However, the project has picked up steam of late. As recently as last October, the director revealed at a Beyond Fest screening that a sequel was in “very active development” with Legendary Pictures.

The caveat is that Dougherty was careful to clarify that the picture hadn’t been officially greenlit just yet. But even still, this remains the most promising update we’ve heard in some time. Accordingly, we hold out hope that the film is still actively being developed at Legendary. But we will update you if that changes.

The last major news prior to the Beyond Fest announcement came in 2016 via /Film. The director told the outlet:

It is very much my intention to make the sequel. Legendary is very committed to making the movie. Creatively, it’s in process. When it actually happens, I don’t know. But, hopefully, stuff like this — the digital decorations, the comic books, the merchandise, and what have you — will tide people over and I can finally get around to making it. Nothing would make me happier than returning to that universe. Like, I miss Sam.”

Official synopsis per Google Movies: Interwoven stories demonstrate that some traditions are best not forgotten as the residents (Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Dylan Baker) of a small town face real ghosts and goblins on Halloween. Tales of terror reveal the consequences of extinguishing a Jack-o-Lantern before midnight and a grumpy hermit’s encounter with a sinister trick-or-treater.
